Seven Concepts over nearly five years. Enough with the teasing & waiting just give us the Damn Car...
1. Toyota FT-HS 01/2007
It had nothing to do with the FT-86; it was a big V6 RWD hybrid. But styling is influential.
2. Toyota FT-86 10/2009
The real start of things from Toyota. This puts a marker in the automotive industry, not production-feasible yet. The FT-86 is powered not by a Toyota engine, but by Subaru’s 2.0L “Boxer” engine (WRX, anyone?). With that engine, power to the rear wheels and an asking price of around $20,000, the FT-86′s specifications read like a wish list of what many have been asking for.
3. Toyota FT-86 03/2011
Near-final body style. Toyota has no other sports-car, so this couldn’t cost any sales.
4. Subaru Concept 03/2011
By unveiling Boxer Sports-Car Architecture, Subaru shows it did the engineering.
5. Scion FR-S 04/2011
Toyota will sell it under its Scion “youth brand” in the US, so time for another concept please.
6. Toyota FT-86II 09/2011
Earlier car resprayed, with fewer headlines but gets Frankfurt and JIMS show goers onto the stands.
7. Subaru BRZ STI 11/2011
A big wing and tailpipes to celebrate Subaru’s tuner arm-BRZ is the real name.
